Philosophy
At Greendale Primary School, our Malay Language Unit is guided by a holistic framework centred on nurturing students who experience the Joy of Learning — through a love for the language, an appreciation of the culture, and a readiness for the future.
We believe that every student can grow into a confident and enthusiastic Malay Language learner. Our programmes are designed to cultivate a genuine love for the Malay Language and culture, while equipping students with the skills they need to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Our curriculum is carefully structured to develop students' proficiency across all key language skills — listening, speaking, reading, writing, spoken interaction, and written interaction. Clear learning outcomes are set at each level, ensuring that every student progresses meaningfully and builds a strong foundation in Malay Language mastery.
We bring learning to life through purposeful and engaging pedagogy. Educational Technology is used not merely as a tool, but to facilitate rich learning interactions. Our classrooms are designed to be participatory, connected, and reflective. We encourage students to collaborate, think critically, and take ownership of their learning journey. Active learning experiences ensure that students are engaged to participants rather than passive recipients.
Malay Language Key Programmes
Mother Tongue Fortnight
Our annual Mother Tongue Fortnight is a vibrant celebration of the Malay Language and its rich cultural heritage. Over two weeks, students participate in a variety of engaging activities that bring the language to life beyond the classroom. From storytelling and games to craft and performance, the fortnight creates an immersive environment where students can use Malay Language authentically and joyfully, deepening both their language skills and their cultural appreciation.
Language and Cultural Camp
The Language and Cultural Camp offers students an enriching experience that connects language learning with cultural discovery. Through hands-on activities, students explore Malay traditions, values, and practices in a fun and meaningful setting. The camp fosters a deeper sense of identity and belonging, while giving students the opportunity to communicate and interact in Malay Language in real-world contexts. It is a highlight of our department calendar and a memorable experience for all who participate.
Cultural Performance
The Cultural Performance initiative complements classroom learning by exposing students to authentic local Malay cultural performances. Through this programme, students are able to immerse themselves in the rich traditions and artistic expressions of Malay culture, fostering a deeper appreciation and passion for the Malay Language beyond the school environment.
